Who are Stephen Ministers?

Stephen Ministers are a confidential group of lay persons (lay is a church word for anybody who is not a pastor) who undergo 50 hours of structured training in order to provide care and support to members of Eastminster who are experiencing a crisis in their life.

Such crisis could be defined as:

·        Childbirth

·        Negative family Relationships

·        Death of a Loved One

·        Loneliness

·        Discouragement

·        Hospitalization

·        Being a Shut-in

·        Terminal illness

The emphasis here is that lay persons are trained to be care-givers, not cure givers.  The cure is in God's hands and the hands of those trained in the healing professions.  Very simply, Stephen Ministries is a Christian based ministry of caring.

What Do Stephen Ministers Do

This can best be illustrated by an analogy:

In a crisis situation our co-pastors respond much like firefighters – they rush to the scene to be on the front line of Christian support.  After the fire is out (figuratively speaking) another crisis will break out in our congregation, and they rush off to that scene.  They still provide front line support to the victim, but their time quickly becomes consumed by the second, third, and fourth crisis.  These responses are of course, always in addition to their other duties as co-pastors.

This is where the Stephen Ministers come in.  Stephen Ministers are people who come in after the fire is out and help the people who are suffering, sort through and clear the debris and begin to rebuild their lives.

Stephen Ministers continue to give care as long as needed during the rebuilding process.  This rebuilding can be anywhere from one month to one year.  They provide the steady, consistent one-to-one follow-up care that our co-pastors want to ensure.  A Stephen Minister walks alongside the person for as long as he or she needs care, bringing unconditional love and acceptance to the person just like Jesus taught.

Who Benefits

Anyone going through difficult times who needs some one to:

·        Care,

·        Listen,

·        Support,

·        Share on a-one-to-one confidential basis

Our Mission Is…

"Encourage one another and building each other up."

Consider allowing a Stephen Minister to walk with you on your journey to wholeness.

If you want to be part of this ministry or have a need, or know someone that has a need for a Stephen Minister, contact the church office by phone at (321)723-8371 or by email.

Prayer Chain

Resurrection Ranch

In 1986, the founder of what is known today as Resurrection Ranch, took a homeless pregnant girl into her home.  She had been sleeping under a boat.  From that point the ministry grew into what is known as the Resurrection Ranch Ministry that lives out the teaching of Jesus who said,

"Whatsoever you do unto the least of these, you do it also unto me." (Matt. 25:40-45)

Destructive life cycles can only be broken when people are changed from the inside out.  At the ranch, hundreds of lives and families are restored to a wholeness most have never experienced or even dreamed possible.

Formed in 1988, Resurrection Ranch is a sanctuary offering food, shelter, and safety in an environment where people can regain hope, develop skills, find jobs, and rejoin society.  The Ranch is a family restoration ministry.

Facilities include family units, separate men and women's dormitories, a central kitchen and eating area, laundry facilities and multi-purpose areas.  Between 40 - 50 people can be accommodated at one time and the Ranch is usually filled to capacity.

About one-third of the of the residents at any give time are children under 12-years old.  Residents perform all kitchen, housekeeping, grounds keeping, laundry and maintenance activities, in addition to other employment responsibilities.  Prayer, daily Bible study and Spiritual growth are as integral to life at the Ranch as food, shelter and safety.

Monthly operating expenses are over $10,000.  Resurrection Ranch is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization that depends entirely on the generous donations of churches, individuals, and organizations for its support.

Habitat for Humanity Brevard County, Inc (HFHBC)

Eastminster is actively involved in making an impact for Christ in the local community.  Volunteers from Eastminster had the privilege of constructing a Habitat sponsored home in 2003 and now in 2006.

What is Habitat all about?

Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County (HFHBC) is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.  HFHSB invites people from all walks life to work together in partnership to build houses with families in need.

Since its start in 1985, Habitat completed over 107 200 homes.

Their goal for fiscal year 2007 is to complete 25 homes.

HFHBC is not a charity or a give-away program.  Habitat for Humanity builds houses with Brevard County families in need.  Volunteer labor is used to build houses keeping building costs low for Partner families.  These Habitat homeowners pay a down payment and a monthly zero interest mortgage payment, which includes property taxes and homeowners insurance.  They also invest hundreds of hours of their own labor –“Sweat Equity”- into building their own houses and the houses of other; as well as working with other non-profits organizations in our community.  As Habitat homeowners pay their mortgages, the money goes into a revolving fund that helps build houses with other families.  HFHBC tithes 10% on undesignated donations to support house-building efforts internationally.

Update 12 March 2007

We’re in the home stretch! The floor tile is completely installed.  By the end of January, the baseboard and closet shelving should be completed, and all of the doors hung.  We’re on schedule for finishing the house by February 28. All walls and ceilings are now painted, thanks to the hard work of the volunteers last weekend and the favorable weather!

This week we’ll focus on building the fence on the south side of the house.  After the electrical has been installed and inspected (scheduled for this week), we’ll resume work on the interior.  Ideally this will be next week and will focus on the floor tile.

Please let me know if want to come this week to help build the fence & specify the day.  If you want to help but fencing isn’t your thing, you’re welcome to help with the vinyl siding on the house next door.

Update 3 Dec 2006

It was another smashingly successful weekend at the house!  Many thanks especially to Eastminster volunteers John Abernathy, Brian McClure, Cliff and Wendy Miller, and Joyce Wilfong for their help.  The roof shingles are essentially finished, and we’re about halfway done with the vinyl siding.  Praise be to God!

Update 30 Oct 2006

There will be work available at the jobsite this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 2-4, and also next Thursday Nov. 9th.

We made excellent progress on getting several of the trusses in place!  The next couple of weeks will focus on finishing the truss work, then nailing the decking plywood to the trusses, and also nailing on the OSB to the studs.

Update 21 Oct 2006

Next Saturday the 28th we will set the trusses.  We’ll need help lifting them, setting them in place & of course hammering (some ladder work required).  Please let me know by Tuesday the 24th if you plan to come.
