Eastminster Presbyterian Weekday Preschool has high standards in which we carefully screen and select candidates that will teach your children.  All teachers comply with Eastminster Child Protection and Safety Policy.  We have assembled a staff of sensitive, loving and caring professionals that encourage continued growth and development for your children.

Each Staff member is required to complete and certify themselves in First Aid and Infant/Child CPR.  In addition to holding a CDA (Child Development Associate) or higher degree, it is mandated by Environmental Health to obtain State Certification concentrating on Rules and Regulations, Child Abuse and Neglect, the Ages and Stages of Child Development and Health/Nutrition.  In addition to meeting these requirements, continuing education is mandatory for our teachers.  This ensures they have proper, updated training and ability.

The Weekday Preschool originally began as a “Mother’s Day Out” in 1997.  From there the program grew into our preschool program, which is supported by the Preschool Ministry Team.  The mission of the Weekday Preschool Ministry Team is to extend the ministry and mission of the church by providing quality care for preschoolers.  The program has a strong Christian foundation and presents a conscious awareness of God, His creation and constant love.  A well-rounded and balanced program of physical, emotional, social, cognitive and spiritual activities are provided. The Ministry Team is tasked with monitoring that mission and continuing to improve available services. It is within this context that all areas of learning are expressed.

VIRGINIA MITCHELL,

Toddler Teacher

Her  hobbies  include sewing and quilting. Virginia’s observations about working in the preschool are serious but profound: “Most people hear the word ‘toddler’ and picture babies playing all day. While we engage in plenty of play in our classroom, we have also proven that these little people can create amazing art (check out our hand painted quilt), recognize their own names and their own space, take great pride in their cooking projects, and build ‘architectural masterpieces,’ as evidenced by the wood sculptures displayed in last year’s art show. We do our very best to make learning a fun experience!”

She is the mother of two children and her family enjoys camping, canoeing, and going to the movies and the theater. Once a year they visit family in Connecticut.

OUR PHILOSOPHY:

At Eastminster Presbyterian Weekday Preschool, it is our desire to provide a safe and nurturing environment that will promote the physical, spiritual, social, emotional and cognitive development of the children in our care.  Our intent is to facilitate a program that is developmentally appropriate.

Our classrooms are designed to provide educational learning experiences that are at the age and stage of your child’s development.  Incorporated into the daily schedule and curriculum are weekly themes.  While introducing various topics, children explore by hands-on experience within the classroom centers and circle time.

The learning opportunities for young children are endless.  It may seem as though they are just playing, but in reality they are developing and polishing many skills needed for formal education. The teacher’s role is to scaffold each child’s learning experiences.  We continuously provide curriculum that fits each individual child’s current level of performance while encouraging developmental achievements.  Both child and teacher-directed PLAY are essential components of our curriculum because it is through this vehicle that mental growth, creativity and social skills are stimulated.

We encourage children to develop a strong positive attitude and self esteem.  By enabling children and providing age-appropriate learning opportunities, our environment allows children the freedom they need to move throughout the classroom and focus on their area of interest.  Centers provide manipulatives that challenge their abilities and previously-learned knowledge.  Throughout the year we observe children organizing and making connections.

In conclusion, one of the most vital and necessary skills that preschool-age children should be developing should be his/her ability to function with their peers and adults.  It is with this accomplishment, that the child can grow as a whole person. Our observations clearly indicate that children absorb information, process and organize information and then have a unique ability to convey their learning back to us in a way that makes sense to them.
