We recently had an opportunity to catch up with Syd (Christian Education Director) and ask some questions concerning the seniors.

Mariners

So, from the name this group does some type of yachting or something?

Well not quite but it does have a nautical theme to it.  This is an inter-generational group that is always looking for new members. The Mariners program offers the following:

  • Christian Fellowship (together having fun)

  • Charitable Support (raising and donating money)

  • Service to the Church (help with the church facilities and missions)

“Inter-Generational group,” that’s an interesting phrase! I would guess that means that anybody can be involved?

That’s right, open to everyone.

What’s the history?

The group started at Eastminster in 1989 as the, “Space Coast Mariners.”

When do they get together?

They meet for a group dinner on the 3rd Friday of the month. (Calendar) There are other meetings and “cruises,” but this is the regular meeting.

Is there a general focus or purpose for this year (2006)?

Yes, the Mariners are presently helping to support three areas here at Eastminster:

1) Support for Eastminster’s missionary in Hungary,
2) the “Power & Light,” youth group and
3) Helping out with the landscaping around Eastminster.

So who do we contact if we want to go “cruising?”

They can always call the church office (321)723-8371, or check the calendar for the place and time of the next meeting.

Prime Timers
Hey, that’s a name that's got some status!

Well the name might describe the age group but it certainly doesn’t describe the type of activities that they do! The Prime Timers like the Mariners, are another large group here at Eastminster. The big thing about them is that they are always going somewhere. I think they just use Eastminster as a stopping off place between trips.

For example….

Well, a typical weekday or weekend would have the Prime Timers headed to a pre-season baseball game then to Disney or a Dinner Show. The next weekend they would be off to a new restaurant or to see a local play.

So when is their next meeting?

Who knows they are always going places! Well not really. They meet for the “3rd Thursday Lunch Out,” each month. In addition the last Friday of each month is “Game Day,” at the church.

So how does a prospective "Prime Timer " get in touch with them?

They can always call the church office (321)723-8371, or check the calendar for the place and time of the next meeting or outing.

Shepherd's Center-Beachside

The Shepherd's Center-Beachside is a not-for-profit faith based Florida Corporation empowering senior adults in the definition and quality of their lives. The program is a ministry by and for older adults rather than a ministry to them. The heart of this effort is our Adventures in Learning programs. Classes include

  Beginning/Intermediate/Advance Computers,

  Current Events,

  Beginning/Advanced Bridge,

  Spanish,

  German,

  Italian,

  Quilting,

  Gardening,

  Senior Exercise,

  Dancing, etc.

All classes are taught by senior volunteer participants. Right now there are twenty-two class selections, taught over two days for eight weeks, four times each year.

The Shepherd's Center-Beachside, is owned and managed by a Board of Trustees. Each of the eight sponsoring beach Churches appoint one voting member and they determine the direction and activities of the Center. They also provide us with a place to hold our Adventures in Learning classes.
